Many people have found that SQL maintenance plans in SQL Server 2008 won’t delete old backups.

The solution is to pay careful attention to the extension that the plan is being told to look for. By default, most people type in ‘.bak’, ie with a dot. Don’t. Just tell it to look for bak without the dot and it should work.
